The Swan and Talbot History
The Swan and Talbot has an amazing history to tell. Having recently undergone an extensive full renovation we now offer a perfect destination for drinking, dining and staying in the centre of Wetherby.
Wetherby is situated on the A1, built along the route of the old Roman Road, it was the most important road in ancient England.
Established in 1611 during the reign of King James VI, The Swan and Talbot is one of the oldest buildings in Wetherby. It is a grade 2 listed building with several original features, low ceilings, original beams and doors and a beautiful fireplace for cosy winter evenings. There has been a hostelry, inn, and later, a public house in this building for more than 400 years.
The Swan and Talbot was once a posting inn on the Great North Road. Our proximity to the 700-year-old Wetherby Bridge over the River Wharfe led to The Swan and Talbot being a significant coaching inn on the North/South route. Originally named The Dog and Swan, the inn carried the coat of arms of the Swann family who lived at nearby Askham Manor and a Talbot was a type of hunting dog.
